“All the President’s Men” is a movie based on the journalists who helped uncover the Watergate Scandal. A Washington Post reporter named Bob Woodward is covering a story of what looked like a break-in at the Democratic Party National Headquarters. The editor of the Washington Post assigns Woodward and Carl Bernstein to the story. As they further investigate the break-in, they find that the crime is even bigger than they realize, with its perpetrators being traced all the way into the Republican Party and even the White House itself.
If it weren’t for Woodward and Bernstein, the Watergate scandal would not have been uncovered. All of the fellow reporters did not have the advantages that they had. Woodward and Bernstein had the advantage of having a personal informant that was on the “inside” of the whole scandal. Woodward and Bernstein were able to uncover all of the facts and evidence of the Watergate Scandal with the help of an anonymous informant they named “Deep Throat.” In my opinion, Deep Throat gave Woodward and Bernstein the crucial and significant information for moral and patriotic reasons. He was looking for justice to be done upon those who abused the trust of the American citizens. Even though he knew he would be portrayed as a traitor to the Nixon Administration, he knew in his heart that it was the correct thing to do.
I believe that this movie is somewhat an accurate portrayal of journalism. The actors who played Woodward and Bernstein did a very believable job in order to assume the role as a real life journalist, or at least the stereotyped kind. They had the untidy look with an equally untidy apartment, along with the smoking and fast food. In my opinion they really weren’t in that much of danger of anything. They were able to keep their meetings brief and commenced them with the utmost secrecy in order to not be caught by anyone who would oppose their actions.
This movie can show the worst of American Society when it shows the president, the leader of the United States, committing shady and irresponsible actions. Although, the actions of the president shouldn’t reflect the country he leads. American Society is redeemed in this movie when Deep Throat “betrays” his faction and reveals all of its secrets to the press. Thereby shining the light on the perpetrators and has justice done upon them. I like this movie because it is a very informative device to publicly reveal the Watergate Scandal. I really dislike the fact that some parts are overly exaggerated and changed in order to make the movie more appealing to movie goers.
In conclusion, this movie is a well developed representation of the Watergate Scandal and the Journalism that made it visible to the public. Due to the persistent efforts of the press, the world will never be able to keep or hide any secrets. This movie made me realize that without the press, the world will have no way to communicate important information, except for word of mouth, which in turn would be warped and exaggerated by the people. The press is a valuable asset to humanity, because without it, Nixon and his little faction would have gone unpunished for the crimes committed during the Watergate Scandal.Daryl Kris Dumadag
